Performance and Rehabilitation

I would like to thank Sport Cowichan for inviting me to be a part of this exciting new service they are providing for the sporting residents of the Cowichan Valley. I will be writing on topics oriented around human performance and rehabilitation. If you have topics or questions that you would like covered please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

I have been involved in sports of most of my life.  I have dealt with many injuries personally and professionally and know what that does to your performance now and how those old sport injuries can play a role for the rest of your life.  My articles will be for athletes young and old and for anybody who wants to learn about how to use their body better.

There is a relatively new term called Prehabilitation that refers to prevention as the best rehabilitation.  When you look at the important components behind preventing injuries, performing your best and rehabilitating from injuries you will see there are common principles that benefit all three.  I will speak about these principles and give you some simple tools to be able to help you move better, recover better and perform better.

Athletes need to keep their bodies strong and ready for the demands their sport and life require.  They also need to keep loose and flexible so they can get the most speed and reduce the risk of injuries.  From both a training and rehabilitation point of view, the traditional way of doing this is Stretch and Strengthen.  The concepts themselves make sense but how they are applied can sometimes do more damage than good.

I believe it is important to know not just what to do, but why you’re doing it and how to do it.  Identifying what your intention is and setting some goals are an important starting point. Then creating a realistic plan of how you are going to be able to achieve those results.  What actions you are going to take daily or weekly and then how are you going to be able to measure the success of your actions are important for you’re your ongoing commitment and motivation to your plan.

This may sound daunting for a kid who just wants to play ball or for parent who is recovering from back pain but the plan and actions don’t have to be difficult or time consuming.   It is just a matter of seeing where you are and where you want to be and matching that with what is going to fit into your lifestyle.  There are many easy and quick things that can be incorporated into just about anyone’s routine but there’s no sense in wasting your time on things with little or no benefit or stretching the wrong way and leaving yourself more susceptible to pain or injuries.

Reducing pain and injuries helps the individual, the family and the team. Being able to get over old injuries and move like you are years younger is enjoyable and can give you a new sense of hope and motivation for the future.  Keep an eye on my columns and together we can find ways to create a new image of ourselves moving and performing better.
