I know that I am supposed to keep things local and amateur and all that but every now and again I have to spout about my Canucks and the Hapless Habs. Too many people have been calling Gillis down and criticizing the signing of the Sedin twins. The usual beakers against the Nucks are Pittsburgh fans (bandwagon bitches) Toronto fans (too pathetic of a situation to attck right now) and the very worst of all - Montreal fans. How long was Vancouver going to get away with paying the twins 3.575 million a year? I do not think people understand what a bargain that was. All of these Hab fans are criticizing Vancouver for signing the two Sedins for $12 million while Montreal is now spending $8 miliion on the 58 pointer, Gomez and another $5 million each for Cammalleri and Gionta. That's $18 large for the bumbling Habitant. Sorry Hab fans but talk about brutal. Montreal is left with $8 million of their cap. Now how in the world could they ever sign unrestricted free agents Koivu, Tanguay, Kovalev, Lang, Brisebois and Schneider. They can not, so they can pretty much French kiss all of them good bye. They need to use the money to sign restricted free agents Plekanic and Latendresse and more importantly get one or both of their goalies signed by the end of the year. Cary Price is going to cost more than $850,000 next year. So to the Montreal Canadiens fans - how about a nice meal of shut the hell up. And now with the Sedins locked in for five more years the Canucks can put the final touches on the team that they want. The Canucks are currently sitting seven million below cap right now with almost the whole team signed. They have close to the same squad as last year, less Sundin, Ohlund and Pyatt, but that does include newly acquired Mikael Sammeulsson and young Austrian, Michael Grabner. They still need to sign an inexpensive Shane O'Brien, Ossi Vaananen and Kyle (I'll play when I want to) Wellwood. The Canucks have a balanced attack with the finesse of the Sedins who stay healthy and pose an offensive threat every shift. The Nucks also have the crash and speedy excitement of twenty four year old Ryan Kesler who is emerging as a leader and who gets better every game. He will undoubtedly lead a line that will take all kinds of defensive smothering off of the Sedins. There is youth: Grabner, Raymond, Hansen, Bernier. These boys have speed and a scoring touch. The Canucks have another secret weapon in Burrows who is such a gamer and ready to improve on last year's big season. There is a big strong defensive core led by Willie Mitchell and young twenty three year old Alex Edler. This will be Edler's big breakthrough year. Kevin Bieksa and Sami Salo (when he is healthy) are ready to jump up and put the puck in the net as well. And how about goaltending. Cory Schneider is the future and Roberto Luongo is the present. Show me a team in the NHL with better one two goaltending. So here is what I think. Vancouver is a sniper signing away from creating the all important first line that will relegate the Sedins to being the best second line in the business. The team can not afford to sign a washed up lazy ass like Sundin. They need a player that can skate with the kids and finish the golden opportunities that this exciting team creates. The only old man to consider is Burnaby Joe Sakic. Signing him would not be like signing Messier or Sundin. It would just be a good opportunity to bring a hockey legend home for his final year. Aside from that, they may throw an offer at Ottawa for Heatley or detroit for Hudler. Who knows? Maybe Kovalev, Tanguay, or Koivu will be sporting the whale. Whatever Gillis does he already has a core of players ready to compete for the division title. The team is balanced with skill and grit, youth and leadership, goal tending and goal scoring. To you Canuck fans - this could be a fun year. To you Montreal fans - Gainey is a moron and the team is going to tank.
